  • The temple is located on the southern bank of the Vaigai river in the temple city of Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India. It is dedicated to the goddess Meenakshi, a form of Shakthi. She is the divine consort of Sundareswarar, a form of Shiva. Meenakshi means the fish-eyed goddess, like fish she never closes her eyes and never stops watching and guarding her devotees. The goddess shrine has the green stone image of Meenakshi, standing in bent-leg posture. Her raised hand holds a lotus, on which sits a green parrot. Her left hand hangs by her side.
